The communication maturity steps

The KIX survey tool is based on 190,000 EUR in research grants and thousands of hours of research. Research established a clear connection between communication and performance in organizations. The KIX database has currently more than 100,000 benchmark points — and is growing steadily.

What do our users say about KIX?

“At the time we implemented KIX, it fulfilled two functions: as a zero measurement and as a complement to an attitude survey among the employees.

KIX gave more perspectives to the result and broadened our interpretation of it. For the communication professionals in the company, it has been positive to work with the survey and introduce a systematic way of measuring what we do.”

“The survey has provided us with a good baseline, which we will continue to work with as we plan our communication activities. The recommendations that come with the result are something we take with us.

The study has also confirmed that communicative efforts have a direct effect on communication maturity. Where we had provided communication support in the organization, the communication maturity was higher.”

“The difference between the communication professionals’ and other respondents’ views of the communication organization was a big surprise. The communication professionals were very satisfied, while others working in the departments of the organization were less satisfied.

It was very good for us to open our eyes to that.”

In 2019, the research that KIX is built on was published in the highly accredited research journal “Public Relations Review”.

The authors were Christina Grandien, Catrin Johansson and Kicki Strandh, the founders of KIX Communication Index.

“It of course means a lot to have your research published in a journal like PRR, especially because you get such a large international reach.”
Catrin Johansson.

How KIX works

Measure.

KIX measures the overall communication maturity and gives recommendations for which actions provide the greatest benefit. The report shows strengths and weaknesses within five areas and different roles in your organization.

Compare.

KIX results can be compared and give a unique possibility to establish a zero measurement – and a benchmark. Of course, we give benefits to organizations wanting to complete a follow-up within 18 months.

Develop.

KIX provides a situational picture of reality and you can tailor activities where needed. You get clear recommendations and access to a network of licensed KIX consultants providing support and advice, training and continuous organizational development.

Do your leaders engage in communicative leadership?
Do your employees take responsibility for communication?
Do you have a sustainable communication climate?

What KIX measures — our five focuses.

Understanding.

Key stakeholders understanding of communication value and function for the organization.

Function.

How the mission of the communication function or department is defined, and your way of working with communication.

Organization.

How communication work is organized, and the degree of integration or specialization.

Climate.

How co-workers, managers and communication professionals contribute to openness, dialogue and feedback.

Competence.

Communication competence of key stakeholders (incl. managers) and need for training.

What our researchers say.

“If communication professionals had more mandate to work with “the right issues” communication could create more value for the organization.”

“Communication professionals’ potential is often untapped, since managers and communication professionals have different opinions on what communication should contribute. That in turn creates problems for both communication professionals and organizations because the work becomes ineffective.”
